After completing magma laude as an MD at the University of Antwerp in 2005, Dr Baets started specialist training in neurology which combined with his PhD in Neurogenetics Groups of the VIB-DMG benefiting from an FWO PhD fellowship. Since the beginning of 2019 Prof. Baets has been the medical director of the Neuromuscular Reference Center at the Antwerp University Hospital. His clinical research expertise encompasses various aspects of neuromuscular disorders including electrophysiology, clinical genetics, and muscle histopathology.
He has a vast experience in molecular genetic studies of various neuromuscular disorders, most notably Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, gene identification studies, genotype-phenotype correlation studies, muscle- and nerve histopathology, and biomarker design.
